| Situated
on the borders of Wiltshire and Dorset, some 4 miles to the east of
Shaftesbury, Sparrow Cottage is a charming, 17th century, detached,
thatched cottage which was once the coach house for the The Forester's
Inn, a short walk from the cottage.
Donhead St Andrew and adjoining Donhead St Mary are delightful
villages with many older cottages and some grander houses, built of the
local green sandstone. They are crossed by a myriad of country lanes,
footpaths and tracks and are ideal walking country. An itinerary
starting from near the cottage leads across fields and woodland to
Wardour Lakes and the ruins of Old Wardour Castle (English Heritage)
which was besieged in the Civil War.
The surrounding area is also rich in stately homes - some of the
loveliest set in grounds of great beauty are Wilton House, Longleat,
Stourhead, Chettle and Kingston Lacy and in the cathedral close at
Salisbury, Malmesbury and Mompesson.
Attractions for children include the large Safari Park at Longleat,
sports centres at Shaftesbury and Salisbury and big sports and leisure
complexes at Poole and Bournemouth on the South Dorset coast, which is
40 minutes' drive away. On the coast there are also many good beaches
to explore.
Sparrow Cottage has been restored with much care by its present owners
and now offers accommodation of charm and character combined with a
high degree of comfort and convenience. The majority of the cottage is
some 300 years old with a more modern extension to the rear. This cottage has been awarded a 4 star grading by the English Tourism Council.
Special rates apply for couples - 20% off the quoted tariff, subject to booking within 4 weeks of the holiday date.
